verse

Winnipeg, 2018

by Mika Deneige

Apparently it has some of the best cuisine in the country
And this really cool music scene, my friend’s mom tells me
She’s going there to sit in on the inquiry
of missing and murdered Indigenous women.

I’ve always thought it was the cold
I’m from the prairies too
All that time pressed together inside
Long months waiting out the snow
You’ve got to keep busy so you make things up
Songs, recipes, anything we can get our hands on
No one notices these cities because let’s be honest
they’re ugly
big industrial outsides, spreading because
there’s no reason to stay contained;
spilling their guts on the fields
green things growing underneath.
