verse

Tragic Beauty

by Bruce McRae

The one and only whoever.
Famous stranger.
Vast unknown.

Who arrives whenever,
wherever, however.
The one soon departed.

O nameless wonder.
Monsieur Implausible.
Immense something-or-other;

you are the dark
for which light exists.
All else being all else,

you are the island
for which there is
no water.
