Tree Walks to City, Takes False Roots

by Robert Allen Beckvall

Born of tree
born of the woods
born of the natural world
where sun, moon, water,
dead leaves and animals
fertilize to fruition,
he was down and out
in this city of man.
He got a job
in this city
where he was not flourishing
where he was not having his hair/leaves
jostled in the free wind.
He was juiced on coffee,
had donut sugar in his sap.
Listless, barren,
used up and useless,
he sat down one day and took root
in front of some apartment building.
