verse

When I cheated on Cora

by D.S. Maolalai

the defense
I suggested
was it wasn't cheating. not
really —
not if we weren't
going to stay
together long-term.

and who would think,
like you right now,
that the first guy to take her out
would be the one
she’d end up marrying?

that was my defense:
not much,
I admit,
but what was I
to say?
look: I'd been drinking
and was drunk
when a friend came over.
we’d been talking
for ages
before her tongue
got near my teeth.

no decision,
just lust:
crackling love
like falling apples.

thick
and hot
and sweet.
